● What is the JET Programme?

The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme is administered through the collaboration of Japan’s local government authorities, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations (CLAIR).

Aiming primarily to promote grassroots internationalisation at the local level, the JET Programme invites young college graduates from around the world to participate in internationalisation initiatives and be involved in foreign language education at Japan’s local government offices, boards of education, elementary schools, junior high schools, and senior high schools.

The JET Programme has received high acclaim both domestically and overseas, and is one of the world’s largest international exchange programmes.

● JET Programme Positions

Assistant Language Teacher (ALT)

These participants teach foreign languages at elementary, junior, and senior high schools. (5,418 participants).*

Coordinator for International Relations (CIR)

These participants are responsible for translation/interpretation and international exchange event planning and implementation
(503 participants).*

Sports Exchange Advisor (SEA)

These participants coach and promote internationalisation through the universal language of sports
(12 participants).*

● The Strengths of JET Programme Participants

JET Programme Participants are experienced at working in a Japanese environment and understand Japanese work culture well
Many JET Programme participants have high Japanese language skills.
JET Programme participants have excellent cross-cultural planning and project management skills, with the ability to create promotional materials which resonate with diverse groups
As assistant teachers, ALTs have excellent communication skills and understand the importance of good presentation
All participants have flexible personalities as they work on various projects and handle a variety of challenging tasks
JET Programme participants are self-motivated and comfortable working autonomously
Many participants have gained a wide variety of professional experience before joining the JET Programme
